 Christine Bussieres was only five years old and already a good swimmer. She had just emerged from the lake when she spotted the strange men in masks with tanks on their backs. Transfixed, she watched as they plunged into the water. Her natural curiosity piqued, Christine dove back in, and kicking her legs furiously, pursued the two divers as they swam deeper and deeper towards the bottom of the lake. Finally, she had to give up. As Christine swam back to the surface for air, she resolved that she, too, would one day explore the lake’s depths.

That childhood adventure says a lot about Christine. A hunger for more knowledge fuels every aspect of life for this gifted professional, and to this day she remains an avid and enthusiastic explorer of the world. “I love to try new things,” she says, “I never stop learning.” She’s dived in the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence River. She’s explored reefs and shipwrecks, coral fields and underwater caves from Florida to Mexico to the Galapagos Islands. Once she even floated a few feet away from a 40-foot whale shark, who seemed to be observing her with equal interest. For Christine, that encounter with nature was just one of the many learning experiences life has to offer.
A Natural Curiosity
Christine’s love for the water came early. She grew up along that same lake where she’d seen those divers. To say she was a “water baby” is an understatement. But for Christine, swimming was never just recreation. It was an adventure in exploring the underwater depths. It was only natural that she would take up scuba diving as a hobby, and for several years now she has been a Dive Master who guides other divers. She is also one of only a few people in Ottawa certified to use closed-circuit rebreathing equipment, specially designed for longer dives. But the underwater world isn’t the only source of Christine’s adventures. For many years she studied music and voice, and she is also a talented gourmet chef and connoisseur of fine wines. As far as Christine is concerned, life’s exploration remains ongoing.
